Prompt #1

Discover your parents’ recipe for success.

As a reporter, you are trying to get different perspectives, not just your own. Prompt #1 asks... what is your parents’ perspective?

What do parents really want for their children?

If your parents could give you ONE piece of advice for a successful life, what would it be? You can either ask 1 parent & use their one piece of advice, or ask 2 parents separately and use both of their pieces of advice. Please do interviews separately so your parents can each give their own advice & tell their own stories.

NOTE: YOU MUST GATHER STORIES/EXAMPLES IN THE INTERVIEW.

Write a 500-1000 word article about the advice they gave you and the stories they shared. Then, engage more with the ideas through the strategies below:

You can either:

  • Tell us why you agree/disagree with the advice

  • Give us an example from your own life when you used or didn’t use this advice

  • Bring in more sources to help you engage with the ideas your parents have

  • Tell us your own philosophy about the topic

  • Why you think this advice is valuable or what you think your readers can do with this advice

INTERVIEWS ARE AN ART FORM.

Asking is all about gathering stories. YOU NEVER WANT A ONE WORD/SENTENCE RESPONSE. Lure them into telling you a story. This is the trick to you being a better writer... having good material!
