Level Up Your Playlist

3 genres, artists, and song recommendations.

Have you ever tried listening to different types of music genres that you’ve never heard before? I have, but I never know which genre to listen to or just what songs are new and interesting. So I did some digging and found 3 different genres that could help you explore the music world. Take a look at these popular artists from those genres and add it to your playlist!

1. Pop

The first genre is pop: music that is based on melodies that are memorable and lyrics that are sometimes repeated. The first influence that made pop get so popular was  rap and R&B. Some pop artists that you could listen to are Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, and Arianna Grande.  Their songs are bangers that get stuck in your head. Some songs that you can listen to are, “The Fate of Ophelia” by Taylor Swift, “Die with a Smile” by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, and “Espresso” by Arianna Grande.

Here are some lyrics from “Die With a Smile”:

“If the world was ending, I'd wanna be next to you
If the party was over and our time on Earth was through
I'd wanna hold you just for a while and die with a smile
If the world was ending, I'd wanna be next to you.”

The song “Die with a Smile” by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga is about how a person doesn’t want to say goodbye to someone they love.

2. Rap

Rap is a music style that usually has fast and rhyming melodies. It could also be artistic, commercial, and political. It also started from the African American community. Raps sometimes have bad words so if your parents don’t let you listen to songs that have bad words, rap would not be a very good genre for you to listen to. Some artists that sing rap are Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay-Z. Also, some songs that you could listen to are “Can't Tell Me Nothing” by Kanye West, “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, and "Mockingbird" by Eminem.

Some of the lyrics from “Mockingbird” by Eminem:

“Hailie, I know you miss your mom, and I know you miss your dad
When I'm gone, but I'm tryin' to give you the life that I never had
I can see you're sad, even when you smile, even when you laugh
I can see it in your eyes, deep inside, you wanna cry.”

The song “Mockingbird” was about how Eminem doesn't want his daughter to cry and shows how much he loves his daughter.

3. K-pop

One last song genre you could listen to is K-pop. K-pop is a genre that started in Korea and usually has synchronized dancing, catchy melodies, and high production value. Some groups are BTS, Blackpink, Boynextdoor, and Nmixx. You might also think that most K-pop songs have a lot of Korean in them but some K-pop songs have more English lyrics than Korean. A few songs that you could try listening to are “JUMP” by Blackpink, “Maniac” by Stray kids, and “APT” by Rose and Bruno Mars

Some lyrics to the song “I feel good” by Boynextdoor:

“I feel good, I, I feel good
I feel good, you won't
I feel good, I, I feel good
I feel good, y'all want?
Get the heck outside, bruh (ow)
We steppin' out now, yeah, 볼륨 더 세게
딸꾹질 나올라, 그래, feel like I'm MJ
Microphone check, one, two
학교종이, dang (tea time)”

The song “I feel good” by Boynextdoor is about youthful freedom, confidence, and rejecting expectations.

Try listening to these genres if you haven’t already. Not only does music make people calm but music can make people really happy and focused. Maybe you are energetic. In that case, listen to rap. Perhaps you’re trying to get work done, then listen to either K-pop or pop. These are just some song genres that you could try and have fun while listening to artists you have never heard before.
