New Dog? New Tricks

Join me and my dog Teddy as we teach you a few simple tips to help your furry friend become their best self.

As a dog owner, remember that training happens all the time, not just once.

When I bought my dog, a Pomeranian named Teddy, he was 2 years old and very energetic. We noticed that he always  peed in the house. At first we started trying to potty train him but we gave up and added some potty training mattresses and told him to pee there. After he mastered potty training he never peed in the house again.

We realized our training was a success so we started training Teddy to do some tricks. It was really difficult but we never gave up, and Teddy didn’t give up either. We taught Teddy a lot of tricks. For example, the paw, the knock the water bottle, the roll-over (he forgot how to roll-over now), stay, and some other ones.  After some years his legs failed him and we had to do 4 surgeries on his back legs. Today he still has to take it slow and not run.

Did you just buy a pet and want to train it, or have you had a pet for a long time and you decided you wanted to teach it new tricks? Either way I will teach you a few things that worked for me and my family.

Training your dog is super important if you want to have a fun, safe, and enjoyable life together. It helps them stay active, think better, get along with other dogs, and feel calm. Dogs do best when we show them what we want, instead of letting them make up their own rules. A trained dog is also way easier to bring them to places and hang out with them at home.

Knock the Bottle Down

Knocking the bottle down is actually really easy. Firstly, you can start by getting your dog's favorite treat. Teddy’s favorite treat is beef jerky, so start with that if you don’t know what kind of treat your dog likes. Then, you tap the treat on the cap of the water bottle to get your dog’s attention. They might try to just eat it but don’t let them and encourage them to push the water bottle. If they were able to do it, congratulate them with loving hugs and pets, and continue doing that for a few days until they can memorize the trick and do it without a treat.

The Roll Over

The roll over is pretty tricky. Your dog might not be comfortable rolling around on the ground so it might be a trick,  but I believe in you.  Firstly, you again get their favorite treat and show it to them. Secondly, you should move your hand in circling movements. Then, grab your dog and roll them so they get what you might be wanting them to do. Thirdly, if they don’t get it, keep doing it and keep encouraging them by helping them roll over.

As a dog owner, remember that training happens all the time, not just once. You need to be patient, hardworking, and consistent, or the training will be for nothing and you don't want all your hard work going to the trash.
