Challenge #2

Add more storytelling to your writing.

Stories make news and current event more personal and relatable to the audience.

Remember some important features of storytelling:

  1. Use people’s first & last names

    1. They can be real, or if you don’t want to expose the person’s name, you can use a fake name.

  2. Create a setting

    1. Where & when is this taking place? In San Francisco last month? In a church? At a school auditorium? At a cafe?

  3. Use imagery to paint a picture

    1. The 5 senses help bring your story to life - touch, smell, taste, sight, sound.

  4. Use dialogue

  5. Emphasize the conflict/problem that the person is going through

  6. Don’t forget to transition from your story into the topic for your article, since the story is just a creative hook

    1. However, please feel free to mention the story at different points throughout your article.

This challenge asks you to add a story to whatever article you are working on using one or more of the elements above.

Pro Tip

If you already started with a story, your challenge is to also bring that story back in the ending in a clever way, or to have a different story in the ending.
