Prompt #3
Create a recipe from your family’s favorite cultural dish.
What does your mom love to cook?
Does your dad have a favorite dessert that he whips up for the holidays?
What food does your grandma prepare when you visit her house?
This month, you will be writing a detailed cooking recipe based on one of your family member’s home-cooked meal recipes. This dish should reflect some aspect about their culture or a culture they are fascinated by.
*You do not need to actually make the dish. However, CHALLENGE will ask you to cook your dish and take pictures along the way for the article! If you do not want to do the challenge, that is okay.
You will:
Choose a family member and ask them what dish they love to make
Please make sure the dish has cultural significance or a rich family tradition
Discuss the recipe with your family member and learn how to prepare the dish
Ask them what they like about this dish and why they chose to share it with you
If there is a story behind why they like this dish your article will be more lively and interesting!
Research this history of this dish and provide some interesting about it in your article introduction
Structure of article:
Introduction that describes
1) your family member and some interesting facts about them
2) why this dish is important to them (please practice storytelling as much as possible)
3) research about the dish and how it relates to the culture
List the ingredients
List the Total Time, Prep Time, and Cook Time
List step by step how to make the dish
Include 1 picture or more (this can be taken from the web of a similar kind of dish OR for bonus points you can make it and take a picture!)
In our video this week, we will go over examples to see how they incorporate recipes with storytelling:
Example #1: Sweet, Sour, & Spicy Fried Chicken (Korea)
Example #2: Lasagna di Carnevale (Italy)
Example #3: Dal Bukhara (India)
