Pirate Ships, Drunken Skirmishes, Abundant Treasures

Why you should dive into the world of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes pirates, the Assassin’s Creed video games, and action packed books.

Edward saw his life flash before his eyes when the ball of a musket raced towards his face. Bang! The musket ball flew with a whistle as it cut through the air.

Does this sound like a fun life for you? Would you like to be a hero on the edge of death, or be stuck as a boring sheep farmer for the rest of your life?

That’s what Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is all about.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag by Oliver Bowden is a historical fiction set in 1711-1722 A.D. Edward Kenway becomes a privateer during the Golden Age of Piracy, which took place in 1650-1730 A.D., to try to make money for his family. A privateer works for the navy and can steal from ships like a pirate but won’t get in trouble. He goes around in his ship stealing money and making terror. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag starts off in England but eventually goes to Caribbean, where all the riches were found during this era.

Black Flag is about Edward Kenway. Edward is a poor sheep farmer who always gets drunk at the bar. He marries a rich woman named Caroline and becomes a privateer to try to make money for her. But, he eventually gets tangled into the old battle between the Templars and the Assassins and becomes an assassin as well as a pirate. Edward wants to be an honest privateer, but he somehow became a pirate. Since Edward wanted to make money, he followed the scent of treasure to the battle of the Templars and the Assassins. Edward is very determined about impressing Caroline, is fearless, greedy, and reckless, never thinking about his consequences. Bowden writes the book in first person so you can experience how Edward feels throughout the story.

This is a great book because there is so much action as well as suspense and mystery, which keeps you at the edge of your seat. The historical fiction genre makes the story more interesting because it is partially real. The best part is when Edward becomes crewmates with Blackbeard, one of the most legendary pirates of all time, and to know that Edward is learning from him is just so cool.

I didn’t like how the book started off with his origins before becoming a pirate because there wasn’t much action during those chapters. However, there was one cool part about the origins. Edward was going to the bar and saw his enemy beating up another person. He took it personally and started to fight him. After the fight was when he met Caroline on the road home.

I liked how the author used first person because throughout the book, I felt connected to Edward and his endeavors. Since you could hear what Edward thought about, it gives you a whole new perspective on life as a pirate.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes pirates, the Assassin’s Creed video games, and action packed books. I give this book 5/5 pirate ships.

Why I write: I like to write because it is a way to use my imagination and express how I think and feel. Writing for me sometimes helps me cool down if I am upset or just helps relieve stress by letting my thoughts go on the paper. Writing helps me prepare for the future by teaching me how to entertain, influence, and inform others with my ideas. When I write informational essays, I research and have a better understanding of what I am writing about. Also, writing helps me build my vocabulary instead of using the same words again and again. Writing will help me with my future and how I progress in life.
